The last classic set we posted was Axwell's Essential Mix from August 2006. Just about a year later, one of my all-time favorite producers and DJs, Kurd Maverick put up this absolute monster of a set for one of the closing parties in Ibiza. You'll hear a non-stop barrage of some of the huge hits from late in 2007 and early into 2008. The first two hours of the set start of with a nice funky undertone by Jodi Martin. Its the perfect marriage between opening and main act DJ and Jodi Martin's track selection is the perfect marinade to a very beefy set later by Kurd. To put it all into perspective, many of the tracks featured in this set were only promo'd during this time, which means that many of the big tracks here didn't see the light of day until early 2008. From Funkerman's "Speed Up" to the Dubfire "Summer of Love" version of Axwell's "I Found You," this set has all the underpinnings of typical epic Ibiza set.
While the track selection is impeccable, one must look beyond the tracks to appreciate this set's beauty. As you'll be able to hear throughout the set, Kurd Maverick is an absolute monster at not only the CDJ, but the EFX-1000 and the Xone 92 mixer (my best guess is he's using a Xone because I know that's one of his favorites and the sweep you hear is pretty similar to the Xone 92).ÂÂ
Prolific use of multiple, layered, filters, feedback loops, appropriate timing for effects, and absolutely spot on beat matching (no sync button here kids) make this DJ set a technical masterpiece. If you've ever seen Kurd play live, you know that he uses the CUE button on each of his CDJs as his own personal drum machine. Its quite the sight to see him bangin out live remixes straight out of the cue while still managing to keep multiple layers of sounds in time.
This set was such a memorable one for me. Tracks played in this set are ones that I still play today and they've got that great timeless quality to them. Even though it was only 3.5 years ago, house has taken quite a turn from the sound that you hear in this set. Trends will always shape the sound, but for those of us who enjoy that feeling of nostalgia, look no further than this set.
Have not been able to to find a tracklist for this set, but if anyone wants to get started on a 5-hour set tracklist, that would be fantastic
