Classic Set: Axwell – The Essential Mix – 08-20-06

Ok first classic set. Every lover of electronic music has an artist (or artists) who they consider their gateway drug to a specific genre. For me, Axwell was the gateway to house.

In 2006, Axwell already had several big productions to his name ('Feel the Vibe,' 'Together,' his remix of 'Watch the Sunrise). From Usher to Bob Sinclar, he's had has hand in a number of productions that span the musical spectrum. But it was on Pete Tong's Essential Mix where Axwell's career as a live DJ really took off. Axwell put together an absolutely slammin two hour mix of the new electro sound (the sound that would dominate all of 2006 and early 2007) and beginnings of the tech house sound that would shape his later productions.

Shortly after appearing on the Essential Mix, Axwell, Steve Angello, Eric Prydz, and Sebastian Ingrosso began to tour the world together as the 'Swedish House Mafia.' After a few hit collaborations (Axwell & Angello aka Supermode with 'Tell me Why'), some creative marketing, a well planned tour schedule, and a wild 2007 WMC catapulted the Swedish House Mafia to world class fame. In 2009, the Swedes took over Monday nights at Pacha Ibiza wth their Dark Forrest Party. Later this year, they will play at two sold out shows at the Brixton Academy in the UK.

Axwell's Essential Mix was a memorable one. Every track works and many of these tracks ruled the 2006/2007 party season. It spans the range of house music, going from the deep and almost soulful Mike Monday remix of "Disco to Disco", to the crazy 'The Whistler,' and finally good 'ol (nice, not crunchy, sounding) electro with the Dirty South remix of 'Changes.' Great stuff.

Audible Therapy: Classic Sets

I've decided to start posting classic sets that really encapsulate the types of music that were playing during a certain time. Keep in mind that electronic music can change drastically change direction in a year and this fact rings absolutely true with house music. The key to a great producer, DJ, or musician is to sound off the flavor(s) of the moment, but still preserve the identify and feeling of the genre.

Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk are examples of two gents who can do this for Trance. They are classic. And that in no way implies that they're old, stogy, or one-sided. They're constantly re-inventing themselves. Armin puts out the weekly "A State of Trance" for two whole hours each time. That's a lot of music to go through and wrap up together in a set, while still making sure that it still sounds fresh. Its no wonder why Armada Records (van Buuren's record label) has got so many great hits to its name.

The classic sets that I'll start posting will showcase the talents of (at the time) up and coming DJs, while they were in the process of making a name for themselves. Most of these individuals ended up carving out their on big or little (depending on how you look at it) niche in the world of electronic music. As you can imagine, these types of sets don't come along that often, so don't expect to hear them every week or month. For those who have never heard these sets, enjoy, you're in for some wild tunes. For those who have, crank it up one more time, its bound to better the next time around.

Andrew Hong – Audible Therapy (Tech House & Progressive House Mix) – November

I decided to throw together a mix of progressive and tech house this month. There have been a slew of compilations out over the past month or so, and it looks like tech and progressive house have dominated the tracklists. Too much tech gives me a headache and too much progressive bores me, but together, they work well.

Enjoy.
